Sales of Lidl own-label Prosecco almost doubled last month, defying the ‘Dry January’ trend, the discounter’s figures show.
UK transactions for the Italian tipple rose 79%, according to year-on-year figures for the first month of 2017, the retailer said.
“Champagne and Prosecco might have once been saved for celebrations but with our range starting at under £5 they’ve become a very affordable luxury,” Lidl UK’s buying director Paul Gibson added.
UK Prosecco sales have grown 25.3% to £454.7m, boosted by an average 0.4% price increase, on volumes up 24.8%, compared with 0.2% increase for Champagne on volumes up just 1.5% [IRI 52 w/e 8 October 2016].
