A limited edition scotch from Lidl is set to become a collector’s item after it went on sale today for £39.99, half its estimated value.
That’s according to Jim Murray, author of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, who gave Lidl’s 33-year-old Maxwell Single Malt Scotch Whisky a score of 95 out of 100.
“Last year Lidl unearthed a couple of stunning whiskies to be sold at an improbably economic price to the consumer,” Murray told The Daily Telegraph. “They’ve done it again for Christmas 2012 with a malt destined to be another collector’s item.
“A very softly smoked, delightfully fruit gem. The oak is pulling out every trick in the book to underscore its great age with an aroma as softly enveloping as it has any right to be. Those who remember fruit salad candy will also be seduced by this one.”
Few whiskies have received such rave reviews from the renowned whisky expert . Even fewer at such a low price. Last year, a rare bottle of Matisse Caperdonich 1972 - also awarded 95 by Murray - was auctioned for £1,000.
