Lidl is set to open nine stores within the next month, as it accelerates its 2025 expansion programme.
The nine openings include four brand new locations, in Canning Town, Preston, Walsall and Wombourne. The other five are reopening after being upgraded with “bigger sales areas and modern amenities, providing enhanced shopping experiences”, according to Lidl.
The upgrades will bring shoppers in Blantyre, Cwmbran, Oldbrook, Wells, and West Ealing a “bigger and better Lidl” following “significant investment”.
Lidl has already opened one store so far this year, in Northampton, and opened 10 in the run-up to Christmas, including in Bovey Tracey, Hemel Hempstead and Ipswich.
Its UK estate now stands at more than 970 stores.
The expansion drive will create hundreds of new roles across the country, according to the discounter. It said staff would benefit from industry-leading maternity and adoption leave, enhanced holiday entitlement and an in-store discounts.
The announcement comes three days after Aldi said it would create more than 1,600 store jobs in 2025.
“As we begin the new year, we’re maintaining our momentum and opening nine state-of-the-art stores, delivering bigger and better shopping experiences to new communities and those we’ve proudly served for an average of 26 years,” said Lidl GB chief development officer Richard Taylor.
“After a record-breaking Christmas, where millions of households turned to Lidl, these openings reflect the growing demand for our unbeatable value and quality,” he added. “This is just the start – we’ve got more openings in the pipeline this year alone and can’t wait to welcome even more customers, both loyal and new, through our doors in the weeks ahead.”
Lidl this week made it 17 months in a row as the fastest-growing bricks & mortar supermarket in Kantar data, with sales up 7.4% year on year in the 12 weeks to 26 January.
