The bars are darker than similar options from Galaxy and Cadbury

Lindt has joined the dark milk chocolate craze with a three-strong selection of sharing bars.

Joining the high-flying chocolatier’s Excellence lineup, the trio comprises 45%, 55% and 65% cocoa variants (rsp: £1.99/80g) – each containing around 14% of milk solids.

This makes them higher in cocoa than similar options from other big-hitting chocolate makers. Galaxy Darker Milk, unveiled in March by Mars Wrigley, contains 33% cocoa, while Cadbury Darkmilk, which Mondelez added in August 2018, is 40%. With a minimum of 14% milk solids, both are aimed at consumers who don’t care for the bitterness of regular dark chocolate.

Lindt’s entry into the dark milk market promises “hints of deep caramel”, “subtle fruity tones” and “undertones of sweet vanilla”.

It comes with the Swiss brand’s value up 8.8% in UK grocery to £255.8m, having added £20.6m on volumes up 8.2% as shoppers increasingly choose premium chocolate [Nielsen 52 w/e 29 December 2018].
