Lipton’s controversial Instagram post has gained 124k likes

Iced tea brand Lipton has claimed to have “discontinued” its core Peach variant in an Instagram post.

The soft drinks brand yesterday posted a graphic of its Peach can adorned with angel wings to the social media site, featuring the caption: “Rest in Peach”.

“You may have heard that our iconic Peach Lipton Ice Tea flavour is getting discontinued,” the text stated.

“We know – it hurts (sorry if we’ve ruined your go-to afternoon chill bev). But don’t worry, the rest of your faves are still here to keep you refreshed. And who knows? Maybe one day, Peach will make a legendary comeback.”

The graphic, which also featured the caption #RIPeach, was signed by the Lipton Ice Tea team.

It remains unclear whether there is any truth to the post, or whether it was published purely as a marketing stunt. Lipton had not responded to requests by the time of publication. Either way, the post has gone viral, with 124k likes, 123k shares and 13.3k comments at the time of writing.

The comments section is filled with complaints from fans of the drink. “The best one is the peach why would you discontinue it just WHY,” posted one shopper. Another consumer branded Lipton’s decision to discontinue Peach as “disgraceful”.

It comes as Lipton is making concerted efforts to broaden its repertoire beyond iced tea alone.

Earlier this month, it added a trio of flavoured sparkling kombucha drinks – Strawberry Mint, Raspberry and Mango Passionfruit (rsp: £4.99/4x250ml) – to tap the growing kombucha market.
