The UK has only a minimal risk of salmonella in turkey, the British Poultry Council has stressed. A report by the European Food Safety Authority last week reported a 4.6% prevalence of a harmful strain of salmonella in UK turkey flocks bred for meat. The BPC stressed that out of the 317 UK fattening flocks studied, only three assured under the Quality British Turkey standard were found to have tested positive for salmonella enteritidis or salmonella typhimurium. "These results endorse Quality British Turkey as the leading choice for high food safety," claimed British Turkey chairman Andrew Lewins.
