A luxury Viennese coffee brand is launching in the UK, targeting independent retailers and high-end foodservice.
European coffee specialist Julius Meinl, which unveiled its range at the London Coffee Festival this week, has invested £500,000 into its UK launch and has opened an office in London.
It is looking to challenge the UK’s grab-and-go coffee market, although Julius Meinl’s Western Europe MD Gennnaro Aniello admitted that replicating the indulgent Austrian coffee culture would be difficult in the UK. However he maintained there was a gap in the UK between the independent artisan coffee roasters and large brands such as Lavazza and Illy.
The range comprises single-origin coffee beans from Kenya, Tanzania, Costa Rica and Guatemala, as well as Julius Meinl President decaf.
The company is also looking to sell its own branded machines into high-end cafes, hotels and restaurants, and ultimately to the consumer.
Julius Meinl is sold in 70 countries worldwide. The company had a turnover of €151m last year.
