Marks and Spencer’s new executive director of food is Maurice Helfgott who replaces Justin King, the newly appointed chief executive of Sainsbury.
Helfgott, director of menswear, joined Marks and Spencer in 1988.
He has spent much of his time in the clothing division, and became the division’s director in
January 2001.
He has also been managing director of Marks and Spencer Ventures, worked in store operations and spent a period with M& S’ former Brooks Brothers subsidiary in New York.
Most recently, he has been responsible for the launch of men’s casualwear brands Blue Harbour and SP. Chief executive of Marks and Spencer Roger Holmes said: “Maurice is one of Marks and Spencer’s brightest stars. He has broad-based experience, has demonstrated his versatility and achieved great success. He has also been the driving force behind segmentation in menswear.
“Our food division is well-established. Maurice will be well-positioned to continue the success of this business.”
Helfgott added: “I am delighted to be appointed to the Marks and Spencer board. It is a privilege to be leading what I believe is the most exciting food business in the UK.
“I look forward to working with the team in developing food and to continuing to lay foundations for future growth, including the roll-out of the Simply Food format.”
