Dubai-style chocolate continues to disrupt retailers’ confectionery aisles, with M&S and Iceland unveiling new takes on the viral trend this week.
M&S has added a Pistachio spin-off (rsp: £8.50/280g) of its chunky, loaded milk chocolate tablet, The Big Daddy, which will hit stores on 23 April.
The result of nine months’ development, Pistachio combines thick milk chocolate with “gooey” caramel, a “light and crunchy” biscuit crumb and a “chunky, nutty” pistachio layer, made with real roasted pistachios, pistachio crème and white chocolate.
It was officially unveiled live on This Morning yesterday after M&S published a series of teaser posts on Instagram and Facebook.
Meanwhile, Iceland has rolled out two branded iterations of Dubai-style chocolate.
Nelino Dubai-Style Chocolate (rsp: £2/62g) and Bolci Dubai Chocolate (rsp: £5/100g) both feature a pistachio cream filling and kadayif pastry.
They hit Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores earlier this week.
While Bolci’s tablet, manufactured in Turkey, snagged a Morrisons listing in March, this is the first major UK grocery listing for Nelino’s Dubai-Style bar, produced by Serbian chocolate manufacturer Nelly and distributed by ITEX Food in the UK.
Despite only hitting shelves a few days ago, the tablets were “already delivering impressive volumes”, claimed Harry Weston, senior project development manager for ITEX Food in a LinkedIn post.
“This new line is a great addition to our growing Dubai chocolate portfolio,” wrote Weston.
“It delivers exceptional value to shoppers looking for something indulgent, different and affordable.”
Indeed, Nelino’s tablet is significantly cheaper than other iterations available in the supermarkets and discounters.
For instance, Lidl’s take on the trend, launched under its JD Gross own label, carries an rsp of £4.99 for a 122g tablet. Lindt’s version, meanwhile – which is sold in Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Ocado – is £10 for 145g.
