Marks and Spencer will open a Simply Food store at the Moto Toddington services on the M1 this summer in its first foray into motorway retailing.
The 2,100 sq ft store will focus on meal solutions, fresh produce, dairy, baked goods, sandwiches, sushi and salads, extending the agreement with Compass subsidiary Select Service Partner to roll-out Simply Food at railway stations.
If the pilot is a success, there are several other potential sites in the 47-strong Moto estate where further Simply Food stores could be developed, said a spokesman. Jill Bruce, general manager of M&S's food formats, said: "The Moto trial will enable us to investigate the potential for further extension of this already popular format."
Separately, Spar is understood to be setting up shop at Roadchef's Clacket Lane services on the M25 in the coming weeks.
Roadchef, which has 20 service stations and its own Restore-branded outlets, ultimately plans to adopt the Spar symbol for all of its c-store outlets, said a spokesman.
