M&S raised £3.2m for its long-term charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support last year through initiatives such as limited-edition products and the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
The figure marks the highest annual donation since the beginning of the partnership seven years ago, in which time M&S has raised more than £9.2m for the charity.
The retailer raised its largest single amount this year - £2.1m - from taking part in the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event on 30 September. For the event, thousands of M&S employees across hundreds of stores dressed up, baked cakes and “took on a variety of fundraising challenges”, resulting in the retailer contributing almost 10% of the total £28.5m raised through the nationwide initiative.
M&S also donated 10% of sales on a number of products to Macmillan, including its classic cake range, cake-to-order range and limited-edition home products launched in September.
In addition, M&S cafés gave 5p from every coffee and cake sold throughout September to the charity.
“Each year we are astounded by the efforts of our wonderful teams and customers in getting behind our partnership with Macmillan, and this year our expectations have been exceeded yet again,” said Steve Kemp, head of hospitality at M&S.
“£3.2m is a fantastic amount to have raised and we are proud to support the incredible work Macmillan does. Now in our seventh year, the partnership really has become all-encompassing, with money raised from in-store products, employee fundraising and of course our loyal customers donating while shopping and via their Sparks cards.”
