Twix multipacks have been shrunk in a bid by owner Mars to mitigate surging costs.
The 23g bars included in its 16x23g and 9x23g multipacks have been swapped for new 20g bars, The Grocer can reveal.
At the time of writing, Tesco was selling the new multipacks at £3 – up from £2 for the previous size, according to Assosia data. However it is still stocking a comparable 9x40g pack for £2 [10 w/e 4 July 2022].
In Sainsbury’s, meanwhile, 16x20g packs were being sold at £2.80 – the same price as they had been in their previous.
Asda was still selling multipacks with 23g bars in them, while Morrisons’ website was listing 9x23g and 16x23g bars as out of stock with no apparent replacement.
A spokeswoman for Mars said the confectionery giant had been “absorbing the rising costs of raw materials and operations for some time, but the growing pressures we are facing mean that more needs to be done”.
“Reducing the size of our products is not a decision we take lightly, but we’re confident that our chocolate brands still offer our customers and consumers the best possible value for money without compromising on quality or taste.”
The Grocer has approached Tesco and Sainsbury’s for comment.
