Majestic Wine has promoted Justin Apthorp, son of chairman John Apthorp, to buying director to take over the running of its buying department from trading director Tony Mason.
Justin Apthorp, whose appointment is effective immediately, is being groomed to replace Mason, who will retire when he turns 60 in 2005. He will move to a three-day working week from January, but will remain on the main board. Chief executive Tim How said Mason would focus on expanding fine wine sales and buying "parcels of wine" at below market price from wholesalers' surplus stocks.
Justin Apthorp has joined the board of Majestic Wine's operating company, Majestic Wine Warehouses. He will continue his role as champagne, sparkling wines, beer and spirits buyer. Both Mason and Justin Apthorp have been with the company since its formation in 1989.
