The government has dropped plans to relax Sunday trading laws after a backbench revolt, with over 50 Tory MPs ready to vote against Johnson’s plan (The Telegraph). The PM has now said he would keep Sunday trading rules “under review”, after facing a rebellion to his proposal (Sky News).
“Relaxing Sunday trading laws is a dangerous distraction in the Covid era,” argues The Telegraph, stating there are better ways to help the struggling high street during the crisis, such as reforming business rates (The Telegraph).
Pubs bosses have lashed out at the latest proposals around their imminent reopening, which would require customers to give out their name and address and “register” once they entered the pub or restaurant. Marston’s boss said the measures would be an ”infringement on people’s liberties” and that the notion they would give out the correct information was “bonkers” (The Telegraph).
