Ocado has watered down its diversity targets

Ocado has gone cold on DE&I, found a report by The Telegraph this weekend. The company has watered down ethnic minority targets due to the strong rate of retention among senior managers, it writes. The news comes shortly after The Grocer’s report on the challenges facing the DE&I agenda in the Trump era.

Also this weekend, The Times explored how martinis are shaking up London’s cocktail scene. The paper interviewed a venue owner who introduced a martini-only menu in response to the backlash against “loud, overcomplicated bars”.

However, that may prove too pricey for many drinkers ahead of another rise in duty. Pubs say average cost of a pint will rise above £5, The Guardian warns this morning. The British Beer and Pub Association said landlords had been left with no choice but to raise prices to offset tax rises that are due to come into force in April. The story is also reported by The Standard, which points to higher labour costs for pub owners.

Meanwhile, coffee is facing price pressures of its own, Caffe Nero boss Gerry Ford warned in an interview with the Mail this weekend. Despite the tough commodity market, Ford is working to keep prices the same across the chain.

Also in the news this weekend, the BBC looked at the growing debate around Jamaican rum. Some producers wish to strengthen rules on which rums can use the term, it writes, to be officially recognised in key export markets the EU and the US.

Finally, Sky News writes an explainer ahead of this week’s Spring Statement. The Treasury believes Chancellor Rachel Reeves must maintain £10bn in headroom after months of economic downturn and geopolitical events since last October’s budget, it says.
