Merchant Gourmet has added a range of ready-to-eat beans to tap the growing demand for pulses.
Jumbo Chickpeas, 5 Bean Medley (cannellini, borlotti, kidney, black and giant butter beans) and Smoky Black Turtle Beans (rsp: £2.25/240g) have already hit Sainsbury’s and Ocado. They will roll into Waitrose on 11 November.
All three variants contain a dash of Italian extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. Black Turtle Beans also contain paprika and chilli.
They can be eaten straight from the pack or heated in the microwave in 90 seconds.
“We are super excited for this pioneering new range to launch,” said Merchant Gourmet MD Richard Peake.
“We’ve seen a convergence of three trends leading to an explosion of interest in the beans and pulses category: the movement towards plant-based, the continued education on the downsides of ultra-processed food, and gut health becoming a real focus,” he added.
By buying pouches, consumers could avoid the “hassle” of tins and their “bland brine”, added Merchant Gourmet head of product Michaela Neame.
It comes after Merchant Gourmet launched a range of frozen veg and grain packs and made its first foray into microwaveable rice in 2023.
In the same year, the posh pulses and grains brand also added Wholegrain Spelt and Black Dhal to its lineup of ready-to-eat pouches.
