Tesco has revealed a major restructure of its senior store management team that replaces the current store format-based divisions with regional ones - and merges the Metro and Express divisions.
Under the changes, Tony Hoggett, who was appointed operations director only last month, becomes retail director overseeing all superstores and Extra formats.
Tesco also revealed it is scrapping its previous format-based structure. Instead, all superstores and Extras will be grouped according to geography. There will be three regions - north, central and south.
Neil McCourt, formerly support officer and managing director for Metro, becomes retail director north. Richard Baker, MD of superstores, becomes retail director central, and Andrew Woolfenden is promoted from Extra operations director to retail director south.
Former Northern Ireland operations director Gary Mills becomes retail director for convenience, covering all Metro and Express stores outside London.
Andrew Rowlinson, MD for Express, who has been at Tesco for more than 40 years, will take up a new role as operating model director, reporting to Hoggett. His previous roles include Tesco dotcom grocery director and availability improvement director.
Andrew Yaxley, the MD of the London format, will remain in his post. Tesco’s structure in the capital remains unchanged.
A Tesco spokesman said: “From a customer perspective, they’re shopping across all our channels and we want to make that experience as seamless as possible.”
He stressed that no staff would face redundancies because of the reorganisation. He added: “Our focus for our larger stores is to make them compelling retail destinations, with extra services like Giraffe and Harris + Hoole.”
