Dairy alternative brand Mighty has expanded its range with a new line-up of “next generation” plant-based drinks that “tastes, looks and feels like dairy milk”.
The Yorkshire-based brand, which until last month was called Mighty Pea, will launch the M.lkology range of drinks direct from mightydrinks.com in early January, and via major supermarkets from mid-January.
Made using exclusive new technology Plantech, which uses “precise fermentation to add the ‘dairy’ factor without the dairy”, the pea protein isolate and oat-based drinks will be available in both the ambient and chilled category in Whole, Semi and Barista variants (rsp: £2.15/one-litre carton).
Mighty said M.lkology’s Whole and Semi variants could be used for all occasions and be treated like their dairy counterparts, including in tea and cereal. The Barista product, meanwhile, was created “specifically for coffee and hot chocolate to replicate the velvety texture and viscosity of frothed milk”, it said.
The trio of new products will sit alongside Mighty’s existing Protein Oat, Unsweetened and Original drinks.
It comes as the business last month announced it had raised £8m to date in new capital to invest in international expansion within the EU and launch the new fermenting technology, which it said could “mimic the texture and viscosity of milk”, giving an end result that had a “creamier, more natural flavour, without the artificial flavours typically associated with previous plant milk iterations”.
“This is the biggest development in plant milk technology and is an exciting time for us to be at the forefront of innovation in the category,” said Mighty co-founder Nick Watkins. “M.lkology will launch the third generation of plant milk with precise fermentation to create a product closer to milk than has ever been seen before.”
The NPD was seen as “the natural evolution of milk” for the UK’s biggest dairy occasions of tea and cereal, Watkins added.
“With more and more people looking for ways to cut down on their impact on the planet, this technology is vital in being able to convert dairy loyalists without comprising on taste, bringing plant milk, and Mighty, to the masses.”
