Gary Mills, operations director for Tesco in Northern Ireland, has been promoted to the executive board of Tesco Ireland, as operations director for both the north and the Republic.
Mills, who is from Belfast, previously worked for Stewarts Supermarkets, which Tesco acquired in 1997. He became a store manager at 22 and worked his way up to store director. As a teenager, Mills was on the books of Manchester United and aspired to be a professional footballer, but moved back to Northern Ireland when he failed to make the grade. Tesco Ireland has 160 stores and 22,500 staff.
