There are signs that the fresh beef price war is cooling after it emerged minced beef prices have risen in the stores of arch-rival retailers Tesco and Asda.
According to data generated by The Grocer 33 price survey (see p26), the on-shelf cost of cheapest own label lean beef steak mince is now £3.02 per kg in both stores. This is up from £2.76 two weeks ago and represents an increase of 9.4%.
The NFU’s Terry Jones said he hoped the increase was the start of a firming of prices. “We need positive signals like this as 2005 and CAP reform approach.”
