A British supplier of mochi has developed two retail brands based on the traditional chewy Japanese rice cakes.
V&H, which supplies Japanese restaurants in the UK, launched a six-strong range of Little Moons mochi-based ice creams alongside a Tsuki mochi truffles line last week
Little Moons is available from Whole Foods Market in toasted sesame, vanilla, coconut, matcha green tea, mango and raspberry flavours (rsp: £5.99/six-pack), while the Tsuki truffles rolled into Selfridges in yuzu lemon cheesecake and dark chocolate flavours (rsp: £4.50/four-pack).
Made in London and hand-rolled according to the traditional method, the products contained around 100 calories and were ideal for consumers looking for “measured indulgence”, said the supplier.
The company, founded in 2010 by siblings Vivien and Howard Wong, currently sells four million pieces of mochi a year to Japanese restaurants in Britain, said Howard Wong. The business was hoping to replicate its success in the retail channel with the two new brands – the company’s first move into stores.
Wong added the listings were the start of a wider retail rollout that was part of V&H’s mission to “put mochi on the map in Britain”.
“Mochi has iconic status in its home country where it is a mass-market product, and it has a growing celebrity following in the West with fans ranging from Harry Styles to Heidi Klum,” said Wong. “We believe mochi will be just as popular with UK consumers who are increasingly looking for luxury and innovative products.”
