Monsters University plastic bottle recalled

A Disney Monsters University bottle has been recalled over choking fears

A Disney Monsters University-branded sports bottle is being recalled over fears a user could choke on the drinking spout.

The bottle, which was sold in retailers including Asda, Argos and John Lewis and has been available by itself and in a set with a bag, was manufactured in China and supplied by Cambridgeshire-based Spearmark International.

The company issued the recall following three complaints that the bottle spout had been pulled out of its cap, presenting a possible choking hazard. It said about 7,000 bottles had been bought by consumers since the bottle went on sale in May.

“When we became aware of a possible safety issue, we immediately took the decision to recall all stock,” said a spokesman for the company. “Spearmark has been manufacturing children’s character housewares for more than 30 years and we’re committed to working to the highest safety and quality standards. We adhere to all EU and British Safety Test requirements.”

The company said no other Spearmark or Monsters University products – including a metal bottle – were affected by the recall.

Asda has issued its own notice urging shoppers who have purchased the bottle to dispose of it or take it back to their local store for a refund. The retailer pointed out that none of its other sports bottles were affected.

The bottle carries product number 80902 and bar code number 5011231809022, while the bag and bottle set is product number 93761 and bar code number 5011231937619. The bar code can be found on the bottom of the product.

The recall echoes that of Britvic’s Fruit Shoot last year, when a faulty bottle cap prompted a recall estimated to have cost the business £28m.
