Morrisons is hoping to generate more than £100,000 for the Sue Ryder charity this Christmas after raising more than £10,000 in just one day.
The drive to raise the six-figure sum – which could provide 30 nurses to care for Sue Ryder patients and families over the festive period – comes on the back of a #GivingTuesday event earlier this week. Over the course of the day, customers were given the option to add £1 to their shopping bill and raised £10,658 for the charity, which provides care to people with end of life and long term needs.
Over the next month the supermarket will hold a variety of fundraisers including raffles, festive quizzes, a ‘guess the weight of the Christmas pudding’ competition and gift wrapping services.
Morrisons has also pledged that £50,000 from the sale of its charity Christmas cards will go towards its partner charity, and is also selling Sue Ryder scratch cards, Christmas cards, a floral 2017 calendar and cuddly toys to raise additional funds.
Since February 2014, Morrisons has raised more than £6 million for Sue Ryder, which has provided over 125,000 extra hours of care.
“We’re very proud of our partnership with Sue Ryder and #GivingTuesday gave us the opportunity to highlight the charity’s incredible work,” said David Scott, head of policy and corporate affairs at Morrisons.
“It was also a chance for our customers and colleagues to come together to celebrate giving for a day, and I’d like to thank everyone who got involved and helped to make the day such a success. We’re looking forward to the rest of our Christmas fundraising activities and we hope customers and colleagues will enjoy the events we have in store.”
