Morrisons in Woking and Low Sizergh Barn Farmshop in Kendal emerged triumphant in this year's Retail Cheese Awards sponsored by Dairy Crest and The Grocer.
The stores were named UK champions in the categories for best multiple and best independent specialist, thanks to their knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff, great ranges and wonderful cheese displays.
The awards - now in their 19th year - celebrate the best cheese counters across the multiple and specialist independent sectors. The winners were announced at a special luncheon at the Café Royal in London yesterday.
Low Sizergh Barn Farmshop in Kendal - was praised by the judges on every front. They liked the fact that it was a true farmshop - with the owners using their own milk to produce several organic cheeses in partnership with a local cheesemaker. Lower Sizergh is also very supportive of products from elsewhere the region, and boasts a wide range that includes continental cheeses, too.
In the category for multiple retailers, Morrisons in Woking won thanks to its eye-catching counter which creates a great first impression with cheeses well stepped and angled for maximum impact. Excellent use of colours and props adds to the overall effect.
The award was doubly special for the store team, as it had previously won the category when it was a flagship store for the Safeway chain.
