MPs have criticised the government’s plans to offer GP services in supermarkets.

Former health secretary Frank Dobson, said: “It’s all very well saying we will get Tesco’s in, but the supermarkets have slaughtered local shops, sometimes to the great inconvenience of the elderly and the disabled.”

He added: “There must be the same danger that supermarket GPs will mean more local surgeries will close in urban and rural areas.”

Dobson’s criticisms were backed by John McDonnell, chairman of the Campaign Group of Labour MPs, and shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley.
