US retail giant Wal-Mart said group third quarter sales grew 11.5%, albeit in "a challenging environment" and that international growth of 14.4% was led by its UK subsidiary Asda.
Wal-Mart boss Lee Scott said: "Going into the important holiday season, we feel confident we are well positioned for a successful fourth quarter."
Group turnover for the period rose to $58.8bn up from $52.7bn last year.

n fuel scheme
Australian retailer Coles Myer has revealed it is considering a fuel discount scheme ­ similar to that of rival Woolworths ­ and a co-branded credit card.
CEO John Fletcher said: "A fuel discount programme can lift sales by as much as 1.5% to 2%."
The 2003 financial year store expansion programme was said to be on schedule with the majority of the projected 34 new and 10 acquired supermarkets, along with 40 liquor store openings, coming on line in the second half.

n italian push
The joint venture between French retailer Leclerc and Italian co-operative organisation Conad has opened its first five hypermarkets in Italy. The chain will focus on competitive price positioning. The two partners said the objective was to manage 30 Leclerc-Conad Italian hypermarkets by 2005.

n CUB team
Australian drinks group Foster's has revealed an executive reshuffle at the top of its Carlton & United Breweries division.
Chief financial officer Trevor O'Hoy has been appointed as CUB's new MD, taking over from Jim King who will take the position of senior vice president, strategy and business development.
Peter Scott, chief financial officer of Foster's Beringer Blass Wine Estate in the US, will replace O'Hoy.

n delhaize hit
Belgian retailer Delhaize posted a 7.5% decline in third quarter sales to E5.5bn due to depressed consumer spending in the US.
