Nestlé has backed down on its basic pay freeze by offering a 1% rise to employees considering strike action.
Union members at the food and drink giant are currently voting to decide whether to hold a strike ballot as soon as June, after the company indicated there would be no rise in basic pay this year.
Nestlé has now offered staff at its York site a 1% increase in basic pay, although it has yet to make offers at any of its other 15 UK sites.
“We want everyone to share in the success of the business and our offer reflects this,” said a Nestlé spokesman.
Nestlé this week announced “real internal growth” of 4.5% in its food and beverage business in the first quarter of 2010.
