Nestlé has been wrapping two of its Quality Street chocolates in different coloured packaging, due to a foil shortage.
The Green Triangle has been wrapped in gold packaging, while Orange Crunch has been packaged in dark bronze foil in a limited run of cartons, tubs and pouches.
The “rare” packs were produced at Nestlé’s Halifax factory, after it became clear that stocks of green and orange foil would not cover a planned production run that took place last week, said the fmcg giant.
The chocolates themselves remained entirely unchanged, said Nestlé.
Production at the factory has now returned to normal and The Green Triangle and Orange Crunch have been restored to their traditional foil colours.
“Quality Street sweets can occasionally be substituted for one another when a particular sweet can’t be manufactured for some reason,” said Nestlé.
“However, on this occasion, it was felt the change of coloured foil was a better solution to make sure as many people as possible get the full Quality Street selection this Christmas.”
According to Quality Street senior brand manager Jemma Handley this wasn’t “a publicity stunt”.
“We’ve not added full-size chocolate bars to the tin or removed the coconut flavour from a handful of tubs.
“We simply didn’t have enough of the right coloured foil to cover the production run of the two sweets in question and, rather than leave them out of the selection altogether, we decided to use different colours for a very limited period.”
It comes after Nestlé last month unveiled plans to transition nine out of the 11 chocolates offered in a tin of Quality Street from the long-standing foil and cellulose sweet wrappers to new paper wraps.
The fmcg giant recently shrunk the size of its Quality Street tubs for the first time in three years in a bid to mitigate soaring costs, as reported by The Grocer.
