NCR has overhauled the self-service checkout, with a smaller, faster ‘next generation’ model that allows retailers to boast more self-service units instore and cut queue times. Significantly, the new system is entirely cashless.
The tiny footprint of the revamped checkouts means retailers can chose to mount the self-checkout kiosk on a wall, install it on a countertop or have it as a free-standing unit. Smaller convenience stores can now consider adopting the self-service technology, whilst larger stores can fit many more units than they currently do in the same space, thanks to the NCR SelfServ 90’s countertop mount measuring just 430mm by 525mm by 315mm.
NCR say the new checkout’s “key purpose” is to make shopping quicker for ‘food for now’ shoppers that grab a few items during peak hours, such as lunchtime.
“Studies show consumers around the world view self-checkout as a key component to making shopping faster, easier and more convenient,” said NCR Retail general manager of self-checkout solutions, Dusty Lutz. “Whether in the supermarket or at a convenience, department, specialty or DIY retailer, there is a large amount of checkout traffic that can be handled with this small footprint solution.”
The new ‘grab and go’ style checkouts will only process card payments, which NCR claim will save shoppers’ more time and save retailers costs associated with cash management. Shoppers can also pay using the latest contactless technology.
Lutz said that as well as using the new checkouts “strategically” to offload store traffic for a single purpose shopping trip, retailers could use the checkouts for a “seasonal pop-up type event”.
The transaction technology giant unveiled its new self-checkouts this week at the National Retail Federation show.
“New variations of self-checkout solutions are redefining its future and will ensure retailers are able to deliver an exceptional experience,” said Lutz. “Going forward, we see this technology with its small footprint debuting in convenience stores where shoppers can come in, grab a few items and scan and pay on their way out the door.”
