Former editor of The Grocer Clive Beddall has been made an OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours.
Beddall, who moved on to the ambassadorial role of editor-at-large with the William Reed Group in June last year after 38 years working for The Grocer, was honoured for his services to the food industry.
He commented: "This is a great honour. I see it is a tribute to The Grocer's editorial team which is the best in the business." Beddall joined The Grocer from the Lancashire Evening Post in 1964 as northern news editor. As editor he steered the magazine through its 1997 relaunch for which it won PPA Business and Professional Magazine of the Year.
Beddall is also a member of the steering committee of the Food Chain Centre.
Charles Reed, MD of the William Reed Group, said: "This honour is a credit to Clive and a credit to the standing of The Grocer. His visionary leadership helped The Grocer to become a key influence and opinion former across the industry."
Sir Don Curry, who headed the Policy Commission on Food and Farming, said: "I am thrilled Clive's contribution has been recognised. I am sure he will continue to contribute to the industry through the food chain centre and in other fields."
Food Standards Agency chief executive Geoffrey Podger was made a Companion of the Bath. He becomes executive director of the European Food Safety Authority at the start of February.
CBEs went to FDF president and Northern Foods chairman Peter Blackburn; Chas Lawrence, former chief executive of Wincanton; Dairy Crest chief executive John Houliston; and Tom Miller, former director of food regulatory affairs at Whitbread.
MBEs went to Diane Lethbridge, chief executive of Taste of the West, Susan Davies, principal policy advisor to the Consumers' Association, and Tony Blackburn, former MLC commercial services manager.
