Scottish Courage is dropping the ale' from Newcastle Brown Ale in an attempt to make the brand more accessible to lager drinkers.
Scottish Courage marketing director Brian Sharp said: "Research shows ale drinkers and brand loyalists know very well what Newcastle Brown is so, for them, the tag is superfluous.
"For the wider market of beer drinkers the word ale is nowadays more likely to be a barrier to trial."
Ale has traditional associations, often involving men with generous beer bellies and beards.
