The Periodical Publishers Association is preparing a legal challenge to Tesco's exclusive distribution deal with WH Smith News, and is collecting funds from members to back the challenge.
PPA chief executive Ian Locks said: "If the magazine distribution route is threatened, then we have to explore all available options to prevent this happening. That is why we have set up the fund."
He warned that the deal could affect distribution to independent retailers, which would have a knock on effect on PPA members.
The PPA has consulted leading law firm Clifford Chance following threats by Tesco to delist publishers' products if they refuse to follow the retailer's designated distribution route.
The PPA believes there is a potentially anticompetitive arrangement between Tesco and WH Smith, and that there is evidence of an abuse of the market position held by the two companies.
