Nisa has reported strong recruitment figures for 2020, with 242 stores joining the symbol group in the first five months of the year.
The 242 additional stores include 37 sites secured with forecourt retailer Ascona Group in May. Nisa said it was £2.4m ahead of recruitment budget in 2020 to date.
It follows a record 2019 for the delivered wholesale and convenience retail specialist, with more than 500 stores enlisted, marking a 40% like-for-like leap in store number recruitment.
Demand for convenience stores and independent retailers has soared during the coronavirus outbreak as shopper behaviour and habits change.
This morning, Kantar revealed symbol operators and independents had grown sales by 69.3% to £799m in the 12 weeks to 14 June 2020. Convenience stores accounted for 14.7% of all grocery sales in the past four weeks, considerably higher than normal levels but down from April’s peak of 16.3%, Kantar reported.
Nisa said demand for ambient, fresh and frozen had surged during lockdown and had continued to remain “exceptionally high”.
“lt has been an incredibly busy start to the calendar year and I remain extremely proud of the way Nisa partners have gone above and beyond to support their local communities during these difficult times,” said Nisa Retail CEO Ken Towle.
“The additional 242 recruitment wins build on the positive momentum set in 2019 and are testament to the strength of Nisa’s retail and wholesale offering. I am pleased to welcome our new partners, who will receive industry-leading support, competitive prices and have access to the award-winning Co-op own brand.
“As we move into the second half, we will continue to support our partners, ensuring they are able to operate profitably and remain well equipped to serve their communities.”
