There are now over 100 retailers currently involved in the pilot

Nisa has scrapped its fuel levy for over 60 more retailers as it continues to review the impact of removing the charge.

The move is an extension of the symbol group’s ongoing test of removing the charge, which it initiated with 40 retailers in June. It now plans to continue the test into 2025, The Grocer understands.

While over 100 retailers are currently involved, there were no plans for the pilot to be rolled out permanently at this stage, according to Nisa. It said it continued to assess the impact on sales and loyalty, while making its proposition more attractive to other retailers operating with different wholesalers.

“Each pilot study is evaluated once concluded by assessing customer feedback and the impact on the wider business,” said a Nisa spokesman.

“Customers will be informed should changes be implemented in the future.”

One retailer said: “We’re seeing the savings from the removal of the fuel levy, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. We need to see a more competitive proposition from pricing too.”

Nisa’s fuel levy fee was initially introduced at £4.88 per delivery in January 2022, as the symbol group and wholesaler grappled with rising operating costs.

It has since fluctuated, from as high as £13.43 in July 2022 to its lowest rate of £3.66 in August last year, in line with a volatile fuel market. Nisa’s policy is to review fuel prices every 13 weeks.

In October, it dropped back down again to £3.66 per delivery for the first time in over a year.
