Arthur Skelhorn, MBE, for many years a central figure in the independent sector, and a regular contributor to The Grocer on bacon matters, has died in a Manchester nursing home aged 91.
Past president on several occasions of the Northern Council of Grocers and Manchester Grocers Association, he had a lengthy career. He entered his grandfather's business in 1917.
Honoured by the Queen in 1986, for services to the food industry, he will also be remembered for his considerable work in the training sector. He was a regular lecturer at Manchester's Hollings College for the retail and catering industries.
A keen exponent of good practice in the provisions industry in particular, he was a regular correspondent to The Grocer, contributing a weekly prices column for our Market News pages.
