A trial by online retailer Ocado to deliver groceries in paper bags has been plagued with problems, The Grocer understands.
Delivery drivers have complained that the bags, which are made from recycled paper, are affected by the moisture levels in their vans' fresh and chilled compartments, leaving them soggy and prone to breakage.
Online grocers have been slammed in the past for the number of plastic bags used to deliver groceries, and Ocado's initiative is evidence that they are tackling the issue.
Both Ocado and Tesco ask delivery customers to return used plastic bags to drivers.
Ocado was unavailable for comment.
