Online shopping service Ocado is reviewing its board structure after the departure of joint md Roger Whiteside this week.

Chief executive Tom Steiner said Ocado wanted to create a streamlined management model.

He said: “Roger has left us by mutual agreement. He has made a large contribution to our business and will remain a shareholder.”

He could not confirm speculation that Ocado’s second md Nigel Robertson would leave at the end of the month.

Waitrose-supplied online service Ocado was set up by three former Goldman Sachs bankers, Steiner, Jason Gissing and Jonathan Faiman, in 2000.

They recruited Whiteside and and Robertson from Marks and Spencer’s food division, as joint managing directors.

Steiner said a rapid roll-out of Ocado was set to continue outside its M25 core area. The service was now making 1,000 deliveries a week in the Midlands after its launch there last month, he said. “We are in the best shape we have ever been in, with annualised sales last week of £60m.”
