Successful use of new onion storage technology has continued to allow British growers to close the seasonal gap reducing reliance on imports.
This year the season for red onions, which have been grown in increasing quantities to fill a niche market, lasts for 10 months of the year, said Bob Taylor, md of Bedfordshire Growers.
"With crops now coming to a close, the fresh harvest will be available again in August. Traditional brown onions are moving in the same direction and shallot growers have already been able to provide bulbs year round," he added.
