First class crop anticipated
A vintage year because of ideal harvesting conditions benefititng at least 80% of the crop, has been forecast by Jeremy Allpress, chairman of the British Onion Producers Association.
The hot weather ensured that skin finish has been particularly good, as well as overall quality. The marketable yield will be up on last year, although bulb size will be down. "The crop has generally fallen into a 50mm to 80mm size band compared to 60mm to 90mm last season," he added.
As a result BOPA claims there will be little requirement for imports, where Holland is the main competitor.
