Cornish milk producer Trewithen Dairy has switched from supplying branded to own-label local milk to Asda in a move described as a first by the supermarket.

Trewithen has been supplying Asda with locally sourced branded milk for the past four years, but began supplying own-label milk to Cornish stores from this month. It has increased production and recruited extra staff to deal with the new contract.

Trewithen is supplied by eight local dairy farmers, with the dairy's milk then passed to Arla Foods for processing. The farmers will get the same 1ppl premium as other Asda suppliers.

"We are delighted to expand the relationship with Trewithen to become one of our dairy suppliers as it supports our commitment to source locally when we can," said Asda's head of sustainable sourcing Chris Brown. Asda also said the move to work closely with Trewithen would reduce its carbon footprint and food miles.
