Retailers are investigating a supplier following allegations made in the Evening Standard.
Following an undercover investigation, the London newspaper claimed Kent-based fruit packer Cross and Wells was using illegal labour and changing sell-by dates on fruit for Sainsbury and Safeway.
Steve Cross, MD of the packhouse, denied any illegality and said the immigration authorities were satisfied with the company's procedures.
However, both Sainsbury and Safeway have now launched their own investigations.
A Sainsbury spokeswoman said: "We take these allegations very seriously. Suppliers are subject to independent audits to ensure our codes of pratice for hygiene and quality assurance are enforced.
"We have begun an investigation of the supplier to make sure our high standards are being adhered to."
Safeway said it had asked the Evening Standard for details so it could investigate further.
