Procter & Gamble is rolling out refillable bottles across its haircare and shampoo brands in Europe and the UK.
Billed as the first ever reusable and refillable aluminium bottle system at scale, from 2021, Head & Shoulders, Pantene, Herbal Essences and Aussie bottles will launch into 100% aluminium bottles.
P&G will offer refill pouches for the brands made from 60% less plastic than a standard brand bottle.
The move would “contribute to making the reuse of packaging irresistible, while enabling a reduction of virgin plastic as per P&G’s Ambition 2030 commitment”, said P&G chief sustainability officer Virginie Helias. “It’s no longer about if or what we can do, but how quickly we can do it – the window is now for embracing new sustainable lifestyles.”
P&G said it was on track to reduce virgin plastic across its entire range of shampoo and conditioner bottles by the end of 2021 – eliminating 300 million plastic bottles from the supply chain every year.
It’s the latest in a barrage of sustainability moves from retailers and suppliers to crack down on plastic usage in the past week alone.
The Grocer revealed this week retailers were in talks to launch a new ‘re-use’ label for food and non-food packaging experts believe could be a “game-changer” in the war against plastic.
Meanwhile, posh ready meals brand Charlie Bigham’s attained B Corp status, Abel & Cole debuted home compostable bags for herbs, and Holland & Barratt rolled out a massive sustainabilty-led refit to its Farnham store.
