Shelves in supermarkets such as Asda, Lidl and Tesco have emptied as shoppers panic-bought essential items such as milk and bread during the weekend’s mini Beast from the East.
The snowfall caused a fear of food shortages among some shoppers, with stores along the 19-mile stretch from Hayle to Truro in Cornwall completely selling out of bread, eggs, vegetables and milk.
Home deliveries were also impacted, with shoppers taking to social media to complain. One Twitter user, Rachel Benfield, was expecting a grocery delivery from Tesco between midday and 1pm, only to be informed via a text message at 8.30am that it had been cancelled because of snow in Worcester. “…roads are clear what’s all that about?,” she asked.
Fellow Tesco-shopper Rachel Nixon said she was “very disappointed” with its service, explaining that she too received a text message after her delivery was due, stating it was “no longer coming” and that she would have to reorder.
The snow fell for two days, leaving some stores unable to restock.
“Our teams have been working hard in the background to ensure that stock availability is maintained in all our stores, should there be any adverse weather this weekend,” a Lidl spokesperson said.
Tesco and Asda have also been contacted by The Grocer.
