Pernod Ricard is looking at rolling out an augmented reality responsible drinking app that allows consumers to check how many units of alcohol are in a glass of wine by viewing it through a smartphone.
The Jacob’s Creek Wine Line app was developed for the Australian market. However, a Pernod Ricard spokesman told The Grocer it was looking at launching the app “from a UK perspective”, although he refused to put a timetable on the launch, saying it may take “a while” to come to market due to the number of stakeholders involved.
The app, which was developed with Australian digital agency Weblings Interactive and launched in May, uses AR technology to calculate the amount of alcohol in different sized glasses - users trace the outline of the liquid and select the wine type or alcohol level to find out the units. The app also tracks how many units are being consumed over a determined period.
Drinkaware said the idea was “very interesting.”
Meanwhile, Tesco is to trial its enhanced AR ‘Tesco Discover’ app on wines after changing AR platform provider from Aurasma to Metaio.
