Master of Wine and wine director of Hatch Mansfield Seldom have I tasted a red wine from anywhere that offers such excellent value for money as this red offering from the Fratelli Martini family. At £2.99 it is unbeatable. Behind the unpretentious packaging lies a dry, medium bodied wine with an attractive scent of dark cherries and spice. The aroma is clean and pure as is the flavour which has highish acidity and enough grip to be an excellent match for food. Yes it is simple and perhaps lacks a little concentration but this is certainly an enjoyable drink and one of the best value wines on the market today. I hope the white is as good! Looking more closely, a red rose is used to bring the packaging to life. I doubt whether consumers will see a rose as having any relevance to its Italian provenance ­ a Ferrari yes ­ but a rose suggests a blended for the English market' status. This bottle would not be out of place as a Valentine's special rather than a serious attempt to make an impact on Italian red sales. To own the red taste from Italy claim it will need a great deal more marketing investment. It does not look cheap and tacky though, as many wines at this level do. The wine is dark red, with a surprisingly good nose. It is light bodied and smooth with ripe berry fruit flavours. It is easy to drink, particularly for the summer and could be served chilled. This is excellent value for £2.99. It would be interesting to try the white, as often cheap Italian reds are better than the white. It is essential the quality of this wine is maintained! That maxim has served the Australians well.
