This beer has a most attractive deep golden brown colour and robust, distinctly hoppy and malty smell which I am sure will seduce real ale fans everywhere. It is more lively on the palate than I would have expected, but this does not detract from what is a thoroughly refreshing and flavoursome beer. The label on the bottle says 'serve cool but not cold' and this is certainly good advice because it benefits from being drunk at the right temperature. I think this is a beer which deserves to succeed. Rating out of 25 17

This packaging fails to live up to the product name. The design has neither modernity nor heritage and, other than the Marston's brand identity, it is difficult to see why consumers would be drawn to try it. We are told the 'new fangled' brewing process involves the use of dwarf hops to give a subtle orange flavour. So unusual are these hops that the designer has decided to fill any empty space on the front label with them. It strikes me that an opportunity has been missed here in both name and design terms to play to this product differentiator of the use of dwarf hops. It has to be asked whether New Fangled is going to be around for long? Perhaps this is just a little too New Fudged. Rating out of 25 9

A traditional ale bottle shape, with a garish label. While understanding what Marston's is trying to do, I'm not sure it works. The front label does arouse interest with the words 'new hops', and the back label detail is also good. It certainly packs a punch with its nose and this is a very dry and hoppy beer - something a very experienced bitter/ale drinker would appreciate, but a novice probably wouldn't even finish the bottle! To me this is not an 'easy to drink' beer and this will considerably limit its appeal and sales. A product for the retailer with a lot of space for ales or in Marston's heartland. Rating out of 25 12
