Philip Morris, the parent company of Kraft Foods and tobacco companies Philip Morris USA. and Philip Morris International, has changed its name to Altria Group.

The New York-based company, which proposed the new name in November 2001, said it wanted the parent company's name to better reflect the difference between the parent company and the operating units. The operating companies will not adopt the new name.

The company said the name Altria, which comes from ‘altus’ — the Latin word for ‘high’, “reflects the fact that we are no longer the same company we once were structurally, culturally or behaviourally.

“This change better reflects who we are today and who we want to be in the future. We believe our new identity allows us to communicate with greater clarity our corporate structure and how our companies manage their respective businesses.”

But some has criticised the name change as a PR stunt by Philip Morris to try and distance itself from “its deadly business practices”.
