Tempeh brand Plant Power has secured its first supermarket listings, with two of its lines going on sale in Sainsbury’s later this month.
The brand’s original block (rsp: £2.50/198g) and curry pieces (rsp: £2.50/180g) will go on sale nationally in the retailer’s chilled plant-based fixture from 17 March.
Plant Power was the first tempeh brand to be listed by a national supermarket chain, said founder Lawrence Hill. His aim was to make the food - an Indonesian staple made by fermenting whole soya beans with a live culture - mainstream in the UK and Europe.
The brand’s full range includes tempeh blocks in original, black bean and chickpea flavours, alongside its range of marinated pieces in curry flavour.
“With gut health and plant based living expected to see huge growth again this year we know tempeh is a product to watch out for,” Hill said, as he promised a spate of NPD activity later this year.
“To be able to partner up with a major retailer like Sainsbury’s just shows how far the movement has come. We’ve created the widest range of tempeh in Europe and have so much more to offer from this amazing product,” he added.
“Sainsbury’s is excited to be working collaboratively with Plant Power to make tempeh a mainstream product in the UK,” said Sainsbury’s meat-free buyer Frankie Campbell. “By being the first retailer to launch tempeh in the market we are pioneering the plant based movement and offering our consumers great choice.”
