English supermarkets are cutting back on the amount of space they give on their shelves to fresh British pork, according to September’s PorkWatch survey.
Results suggest that of the leading three multiples, only Asda had given over more space to domestic product since the previous survey.
Tesco and Sainsbury had dropped back, by 7% and by 12% respectively. Morrisons continued to sell only British.
PorkWatch chairman Richard Lister, a Yorkshire pig farmer, said: “It is disappointing news for shoppers, who have made it clear they want honestly labelled fresh British pork rather than imported pork, which invariably is not as fresh and is of poorer quality.
“Supermarkets in their quest for more market share ignore the wishes of their customers.”
The PorkWatch survey is carried out every other month by English pig farmers. They base their calculations on the space taken up by packs carrying the British Quality Standard Mark for pork.
