The makers of Porky Whites premium sausages are taking on own label and the likes of Richmond and Wall’s with a mid-tier banger called Harry & Jim’s.
The new sausages go on sale in Asda on 28 April, at an introductory price of £1.50 for eight and £1.99 thereafter. They come in three varieties: pork, Cumberland and Lincolnshire.
Supplier Graham White & Co has to date focused largely on the premium sausage sector, and MD Chris Price said the mid-tier market was a logical next step for the company: “If you walk around any retailer, all these mid-tier butcher-style sausages are own label; there isn’t a branded option apart from Wall’s or Richmond. It’s not something that’s been challenged. I think there’s room for some competition.”
Harry & Jim’s had been named after the founding members of Graham White & Co and would be produced in natural hogskin rather than the cheaper synthetic and collagen casings generally used by the mid-tier market, Price added.
The sausages will initially go on sale in Asda’s southern English stores. Graham White & Co is talking with other mults about potential listings.
